Also flogged by the seniors were three boys who had attended a birthday party in a bar, which the madrasah claimed violated its rules and regulations.
In a viral complimentary video, a fellow student claims that the students went to a bar to celebrate the birthday of one of their own, but that they did not consume alcohol, contrary to what the Madrasah’s head believes.
Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu said in a statement that the government has directed that an investigative committee be set up to look into the development. “The government has directed the setting up of an investigative committee to look into the development,” she said.
In video footage, students from an Arabic school were seen being punished for alleged conduct deemed to be contrary to the rules of the school. A delegation from the Kwara State Government visited the school and spoke with the principal.
“The team included the Hon. Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu; Special Assistant to the Governor on Religion (Islam), Alhaji Danmaigoro; Dr Saudat AbduBaqi of the University of Ilorin; Mallam Lawal Olohungbebe of Kwara State University; and Rafiu Ajakaye, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary. ”
NSCDC DSC Parati AbdulHameed and a representative from the Ganmo Divisional Police Officer Ganmo SP Oko Nkama were also part of the team.
“The government’s team carefully listened to the authorities of the Arabic school, the father of the sole girl in the video, and four other students who were involved in the nefarious development,” the statement read in part.
“Regardless of the explanations provided by the authorities regarding the development, the admitted consent of the parents, and the regret expressed by the affected students, the government expresses grave concern about the severe beating captured on video.
Accordingly, the government has directed that an investigative committee comprised of Muslim scholars, leaders, and government officials be established to look into the matter. The head of an Arabic school, who admitted to having directed the punishment, has been asked to step aside pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
According to the government, the affected students have also been transported to a public hospital for a proper medical examination and treatment. To ensure that none of them suffers any physical or psychological harm, they will do so in this manner.
“The government requests that everyone maintain their composure while the committee completes its work and submits a report for further consideration.
“The government expresses its gratitude to the Ganmo Muslim community for its assistance to the team,” according to the statement.
