Kidnapped baby dies after father shoots ex-girlfriend, her nephew, then dies during police chase

After his father allegedly abducted him, killed his mother and nephew, and then died in a police shootout, a 3-month-old baby died Tuesday at the hospital.

According to WLOX, the kid, La’Mello Parker, died around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Eric Derrell Smith and police officers exchanged gunfire, but it’s unclear who fired the fatal shot. An autopsy will be performed.

According to police, Smith, 30, fatally shot his ex-girlfriend Christin Parker, 32, and her nephew Brandon Parker, 26, in Baker, Louisiana, around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

He then reportedly fled with La’Mello, leading a pursuit near the Louisiana border that included several Mississippi law enforcement agencies.

According to WLOX, Smith and police exchanged gunfire just outside of Biloxi. Smith was found dead in the driver’s seat from a gunshot wound that was not self-inflicted.

La’Mello died early Tuesday morning after being rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

The child died as a result of the injuries sustained, despite the efforts of medical personnel, according to Maj. Chris DeBack of the Biloxi Police Department in a statement to WLOX.

According to WLOX, two Harrison County Sheriff officers, one a deputy, have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
