A top politician has been kidnapped ahead of the governorship election in Anambra.
With only 11 days to the Anambra State Governorship election, Mr Obiora Agbasimalo, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate, is yet to be released by his kidnappers.
On September 18, 2021, the former banker was kidnapped while campaigning in Ezinifitte, Nnewi South Local Government Area, and Azhia, Ihiala Local Government Area.
Mr Clement Ojukwu, the LP’s National Organizing Secretary, and Mr Stanley Okoli, a member of the Labour Party Campaign Council, both spoke to journalists on Tuesday in Awka, alleging that their candidate’s kidnapping has a political overtone, citing his popularity as a predictor of his chances of winning the November 6 election.
“Our candidate has not been seen since he was kidnapped on September 18, 2021.” On his journey from Ezinifitte to Azhia in Ihiala, where he was headed for campaign, he was kidnapped with his security aide.
“He has not been anywhere since his kidnapping, and his abductors have always assured us that he is alive, and we feel he will be out soon,” Ojukwu said.
“What we discuss with them and what they tell us is like what a guy and a woman discuss in the bedroom because it is hidden,” Ojukwu said, elaborating on the kidnappers’ demands. We always talk to them to make sure our candidate is still alive, and they always allow us to speak with him.
“His kidnapping is a political act. He worked in the banking industry and no one had ever considered kidnapping him, but since he began campaigning for the governorship of Anambra, he has been targeted and kidnapped. He is extremely well-liked, and his chances are excellent. As a result, his opponents are dissatisfied.”
The party disputed media allegations that it had finalized arrangements to merge its structure with that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to nominate Mr. Valentine Ozigbo as its election candidate.
They claimed that their candidate’s popularity was making his opponents nervous because of the large number of supporters he had amassed, thus the rumors.
“This is not the first time this has happened,” he remarked of Agbasimalo’s chances of winning the election while in prison. People have served time in prison and gone on to win elections. Do you remember Omisore and T.A. Orji? We think he’ll come out on top in the election.
“We don’t need pity votes to win the election; he is well-liked and deserving of victory.” Besides, he is not the only one kidnapped; his security has been kidnapped as well. The police force headquarters and the DSS are on the case, and we expect him to be released soon.”
Agbasimalo had resigned from his banking position in order to run for governor of Anambra. Prior to his kidnapping, he had amassed an unusually large following for an underdog.
