Kelechi Nwakali Calls Out Huesca over Contract Termination
Kelechi Nwakali, a Nigerian international footballer, has slammed his former club, SD Huesca Football Club, for terminating his contract after he accepted the call to wear the Super Eagles shirt at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that on Wednesday, the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner released an official statement on his official Twitter account detailing his ordeal at the hands of the club’s sporting director, Mr Ruben Garcia.

Mr Garcia “put extreme pressure on me not to go to AFCON due to it ‘not being an important tournament,” Kelechi Nwakali claimed after his call up in December last year. He told me that if I went to the AFCON, I would not be allowed to play for Huesca again.”
He claimed that the club had used a variety of coercive tactics to persuade him to sign a new contract, including delaying his wages to force him to do their bidding.
“The club has been abusing its power to bully me into signing a new contract for months,” he says. Paying me late on several occasions has been one of these tactics. Negotiations broke down when my mother became ill, and I asked Ruben for the wages the club owed me so that I could pay for my mother’s hospital bill and treatment. ‘Sign this new contract, and we’ll pay you what you’re owed tonight!’ said Ruben Garcia in response to my request.
Kelechi Nwakali was a member of the Nigerian team at the Cameroon tournament, where he wore the number 25 jersey.
However, Kelechi Nwakali was diagnosed with a Respiratory Tract Infection before Nigeria’s Round of 16 match against Tunisia, and he was unable to return to the club immediately due to the doctor’s orders.
He went on to say that on the final day of the transfer window (January 31, 2022), just before he was set to join his Huesca teammates, Mr Garcia informed him that he would have to leave the club due to a late offer from another La Liga 2 club.
“He threatened that if I didn’t leave the club, he wouldn’t pay me.” I was given the choice of either leaving or facing disciplinary action. “I was never told by the club that they wanted to let me leave in January before January 31st, and this was not a decision that I felt was right for me at the time,” the midfielder claimed.
Mr Garcia and the club’s lawyers opened disciplinary proceedings on February 1, according to the Nigerian International, which resulted in his suspension from the club.
Kelechi Nwakali stated that he was allowed back into training after an intervention from the Spanish Footballers Union (AFE), but that he was still barred from using the facilities or receiving treatment from the club’s physiotherapists.
“Throughout this time, Huesca has not paid my wages,” Nwakali said, “yet I have remained silent in the hopes of a reasonable resolution.”
When Kelechi Nwakali arrived for training on Monday (April 5), however, “a member of the club tried to force me to sign mutual termination papers, which I refused to do,” he said.
The Nigerian international, on the other hand, claims he has no regrets about joining the Super Eagles.
