To Be Jailed for 2 years

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced and , co-defendants in the drug trafficking case against suspended Deputy Police Commissioner , to two years in prison.

They were found guilty on three counts (counts 5,6,7) and sentenced to two years in prison each, but Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that the sentences would run concurrently (that is two years).

The three counts are as follows:

“COUNT 5:

That you, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe, male adult, and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, male adult, imported 21.35 kilogrammes of cocaine without lawful authority on or about January 19, 2022 at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, and thus committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 14(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ACT CAP N30 Laws of the Federation of

“COUNT 6:

That you, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe, male, adult; and you, Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, male, adult, without lawful authority imported 21.35 kilogrammes of cocaine on or about January 25, 2022 at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, and thus committed an offence punishable under section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ACT CAP N30 Laws of the Federation

“COUNT 7:
That on the 25th January 2022, at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, you Chibunna Patrick Umeibe, male, adult; and you Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, male adult and one IK, now at large, knowingly possessed 21.35 kilogrammes of cocaine and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(d) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

On March 7, the two defendants, who are the sixth and seventh in the case, pleaded guilty to possession of illicit drugs in front of the Federal High Court, where they were arraigned alongside Kyari.

Sunday J. Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirgba, and Inspector John Nuhu, all assistant commissioners of police, had pleaded not guilty to the alleged drug trafficking charges.

The duo chose a plea bargain with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency after pleading guilty ().

The judge based his decision on the plea bargain’s recommendations.

He then adjourned the trial of Kyari and others to the 18th, 19th, and 20th of June.
