President Muhammadu Buhari has restated the need to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as part of the government’s efforts at building a new and better Niger Delta region.


Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, the Minister of Transportation, who was a representative of President Buhari, said that this was crucial to achieving the government’s goal of improving the lives of those living in the Niger Delta and the surrounding area.

At the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Buhari gave the opening remarks for a two-day top management retreat of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and Niger Delta Development Commission.

“This retreat would serve as a veritable platform,” he said. “It will offer a unique opportunity to correct whatever irregularities had existed in the past and thereby attain an effective and prosperous working relationship that will be in the best interest of the Niger Delta region and Nation at large.”

The federal government, he emphasised, “has made a huge commitment in the Niger Delta region, in furtherance with its desire to give the people a new lease of life, taking proactive steps to respond to the region’s issues, adopting and implementing more prudent policies and programmes that will bring about a better region.”

The President praised the ministry’s efforts to reposition the and said that it had started to do so in phases. He added that the forensic audit report would soon be implemented, ushering in new  management and a new board for the NDDC.

He praised the ministry for its efforts to integrate all regional development plans from organisations and partners working in the Niger Delta region into a single integrated regional development plan, adding that it would serve as a good plan for the region’s sustainable growth.

President Buhari assured us that the ongoing East-West road project would be finished before the current administration ended, acknowledging the significance of the project to the country’s economy.

He expressed confidence that the retreat will result in NDDC being repositioned to collaborate amicably with the ministry to foster teamwork and improve communication between the two organisations.

Therefore, he urged everyone to “make the most of the retreat and develop resolutions that will galvanise both the ministry and NDDC towards breaking new ground in their mandate to develop the region.”

Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs Umana Okon Umana had earlier stated in his welcome speech that “the Ministry requires collaboration and coordination among the agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders to achieve its mandate of developing and transforming the region.

According to Umana, the ministry will give projects that have a significant impact on security, health, education, water, roads, and other sectors that will meet the basic needs of the local populace priority treatment and funding. She continued, “We would set benchmarks and timelines for projects delivery. Making a difference in the area’s development is our vision.

The minister claimed that when the NDDC and MNDA collaborate “in one accord and focus on the core mandate of both institutions, in the spirit of one government,” the goal of changing the narrative in the region will be accomplished.

Umana praised President Muhammadu Buhari and Niger Delta stakeholders for their efforts to accelerate the development of the Niger Delta region by giving the ministry clear, attainable deliverables. She added that reimagining the Niger Delta would require new work approaches and strategic thinking.

President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Government, the ministry, NDDC, all development partners, and stakeholders were thanked by the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Sharon Ikeazor, “for their unwavering commitment and support towards uplifting the quality of life in the region.”
