Jose Peseiro named Super Eagles’ new head coach


Former Porto Manager, Jose Peseiro has been appointed as the new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

He is expected to follow the team to the African cup of nations just as observer.

Jose Peseiro took over for Gernot Rohr, who had been fired on December 12.

“The Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end of the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr, after careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee,” the NFF communique read.

“However, the Committee decided that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, who has been named interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon, with Mr Peseiro serving only as an observer.”

“It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Jose Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.”

Jose Peseiro Biography

José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro is a Portuguese football manager and former player who played as a forward. After an unassuming career as a player, he went on to coach several clubs in his country, including Sporting CP – which he took to the 2005 UEFA Cup Final– and Porto.

Jose Peseiro Coaching Style.

Playing Career

Peseiro, who had a modest playing career, spent his youth career at local club, Coruchense, where he played from1977–1979 before he signed his first professional contract with Cartaxo in 1979.

He had gone on to lace boots for Coruchense, Oriental, Amora, Oriental, Samora Correia, Torreense, União Santarém, Alcanenense and União Santarém, where he retired in 1994.

Managerial Career

Jose Peseiro started his coaching career in 1992 at União Santarém as a coach/player.

He comes with an elongated and dignifying resume with spells at several top clubs and two countries across the globe.

These include União Montemor, Oriental, Nacional, Real Madrid (assistant), Sporting CP, Al Hilal, Panathinaikos, Rapid București, Rapid București, Braga, Al Wahda, Al Ahly, Porto, Sharjah, Vitória Guimarães and Sporting CP.

He has also made a mark on the international scene as coach of Saudi Arabia from 2009–2011Saudi Arabia and Venezuela from 2020-2021.

Jose Peseiro Honours

Peseiro has a little to show for his vast coaching experience. He won the Portuguese Segunda Divisao with Nacional in the 1999–00 season, AF Madeira Cup in 2001–02, UEFA Cup runner-up with Sporting CP in 2004–05, Taça da Liga with Braga in 2012–13, Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly in 2015–16 and Taça de Portugal runner-up with Porto in the 2015–16 season.
