news update

Plateau state House of assembly on Friday strongly called on citizens of the state to practically stand up and defend themselves and their communities, as the conventional security design is no longer guaranteeing our safety as a people.

“On behalf of the Plateau State House of Assembly, I wish to sympathise with the Government and People of Plateau State on the barbaric and dastardly killings that have been taking place in different communities of Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Jos Nort, and Jos South,” said Hon. Dasun Philip Peter, chairman House Committee on Information, speaking to journalists at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Center in Jos.

All of these killings are unacceptable and condemnable, and the House condemns them all. We express our condolences to the families of all those who have lost loved ones in these attacks.

We applaud the Plateau youths for their sustained coordinated and organised campaigns against the killings, as well as the courage to go viral by sending strong messages to the world using the dead bodies of the mayhem on social media and in the streets of Jos; the display of the corpses in the House is a sign that they recognise the House of Assembly’s authority as an institution. That action is greatly appreciated.Jos killings

As a people’s assembly, he said, “we call on Plateau State citizens to have renewed faith in us,” adding that “we have given the Governor two (2) weeks to act on the Resolutions the House has forwarded on security matters and how to restore peace.”

“We call on the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, to issue a statement defending us as a people and to restore renewed commitment to the Plateau cause,” the members added.

“We are still hoping for the President to make a statement about the killings in Yelwa Zangam, just as he did about the killings of travellers along Rukuba Road, and to show a sign of justice, or we will see him as reflexive about the Plateau conflict.”

“As an Assembly committed to our people’s yearnings and aspirations, we deeply appreciate Plateau people’s calls for encouragement and tasking us to do what we can to save Plateau and its heritage, both at home and in the Diaspora.”

We also want to state unequivocally that we stand with the Plateau people in this difficult time and assure them of our genuine commitment to the state’s future.

We also urge the Plateau’s Traditional Rulers to look inward and release the Local Security Plan to protect Plateau residents, as well as reinforce the Vigilante, Hunters, and local wise men to defend our people. The Plateau State House of Assembly has directed all Local Government Chairmen to suspend their planned Adhoc Staff recruitment and instead recruit 200 Vigilante Personnel in each Local Government Area to boost and argue Local Intelligence Gathering.

Security personnel have been dispatched to apprehend the perpetrators of the mayhem and prosecute them in accordance with the law, he added.
