The death toll from the tanker explosion in Jigawa State has tragically increased to 105, while the number of injured individuals has also risen to 70. The incident, which occurred in the Taura Local Government Area on Wednesday, has left the community in mourning and prompted urgent calls for safety measures.

 

Initial reports had indicated that at least 94 people had lost their lives, with 50 others suffering various degrees of injuries. However, further assessments revealed a higher casualty count.

DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Command, provided insights into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. He confirmed that the disaster was triggered by petrol leaking from the tanker into a gutter.

 

“Unfortunately, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, resulting in a flame that engulfed the area, causing many to perish,” Adam explained. This tragic turn of events highlights the dangers associated with fuel leaks and the risks faced by individuals attempting to collect spilled petrol.

As the situation unfolded, emergency services worked diligently to address the aftermath. Adam stated that 105 corpses have been evacuated from the site, while 70 injured individuals were quickly transported to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for medical care.

 

The fire, which initially posed a significant threat, was eventually brought under control through the coordinated efforts of police officers, firefighters, and local residents.

 

Authorities are now urging community members to exercise caution around fuel leaks and to report any incidents immediately to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The government is also expected to investigate the incident further to ensure that safety protocols are strengthened to protect citizens.
