Adesanya competed in UFC 276 at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday morning against middleweight contender Jared Cannonier.

The Last Stylebender, who made his Octagon debut in 2018, has improved visually with each appearance since then and is still unbeaten in the middleweight division. In the 2019 Fight of the Year against Kelvin Gastelum, he first won the interim title.

The following year, “Izzy” unified the titles by defeating Robert Whittaker.

Since then, he has successfully defended his title four times. Adesanya (22-1) had an otherwise perfect record; his lone defeat came when he attempted to move up to light heavyweight but failed, falling to the champion Jan Blachowicz.

The New Zealander with Nigerian ancestry successfully defended his middleweight championship for the fifth time on Sunday.

While Jared Cannonier knocked out Derek Brunson in the second round in February to become the No. 1 contender at middleweight, Adesanya defeated Robert Whittaker twice in February to retain his title.

In the final round on Sunday, Adesanya was cautious as the crowd became agitated, and Cannonier struggled to secure a takedown.

Israel Adesanya delivered precise jabs, but Cannonier countered with a barrage of punches.

Jared Cannonier, however, was unable to secure a takedown and was ultimately defeated.

Fourth round

Early in the round, Cannonier connected with a light right hand, but in round four, Adesanya caught him with a hard jab.

Adesanya followed it up with two punches and a powerful body kick. Adesanya received yet another right hand strike.

After landing a left, he dodged Cannonier’s wild shot and spun. Adesanya escaped and delivered a leg kick before Cannonier grabbed another clinch along the cage.

Adesanya threw a few inside blows as Cannonier once more huddled close to the cage.

Israel Adesanya immediately resumed his leg kicks before launching a front kick that narrowly missed Cannonier’s face.

Cannonier fired a shot for the first time in the fight, but Adesanya easily avoided the takedown by tossing him into the cage. Cannonier’s sweeping hook was unsuccessful.

Cannonier fired once more, connecting with a right hand.

Then, in his best moment of the fight, he pinned Adesanya up against the cage and scored some solid hits to the body and face.

Adesanya countered with a forceful jab and additional leg kicks.

Right and left hands from Cannonier connected, and Adesanya responded with a four-strike barrage.

In order to clinch Adesanya to the cage, Cannonier then advanced once more.

While holding the clinch and kneeing at Adesanya’s legs, Cannonier took a lot of short shots to the head.

Cannonier performed better in this round, but the champion still likely won.

Stage two:

Adesanya started off with a solid jab and kept Cannonier from getting close by using his length.

Then Adesanya missed a head kick and landed on his body instead.

Adesanya struck Cannonier in the face with a left hand after landing several powerful leg kicks. As Cannonier’s output began to decline, Adesanya increased his body and leg kicks.

Israel Adesanya started off with a few quick punches before connecting with a powerful combination that caused Cannonier to falter.

Adesanya then made an unintentional eye contact, which caused a pause.

Israel Adesanya resumed working on the legs with kicks, but Cannonier soon followed with his own.

Before the round came to an end, Adesanya delivered one final left hand.

First round:

Israel Adesanya, the middleweight champion of the UFC, and Jared Cannonier both executed leg kicks in the opening frame without using any gloves.

Adesanya kicked with his legs and stopped Cannonier’s. The winner avoided an overhand right that was winging and wild.

Adesanya successfully landed a leg kick early while Cannonier missed with his initial attempt.

Early on, both fighters were extremely hesitant, but as Cannonier stalked forward, Adesanya connected with a few left hands and additional leg kicks. After about a minute of combat, Cannonier did score a few leg kicks.

Israel Adesanya used a solid body kick and feints to make Cannonier feel a little uneasy. Adesanya began varying his strikes and angles, but Jared Cannonier was able to land a few more leg kicks.

Cannonier dove to avoid an Adesanya head kick, but he later swallowed a left hand.
