A Police Inspector and two bandits were killed in a gunfight between Ogun Police Command operatives and a group of bandits in the agrarian Yewa North Local Government Area’s Saala Orile forest.
During an exchange of fire on Tuesday, the Police Inspector and the bandits were said to have been killed.
The bandits had apparently infiltrated the forest and were attacking some herdsmen who were grazing nearby and had made distress calls to the police.
Bernard Ediogboyan, the DPO for Ayetoro, was said to have led his men and operatives from the Joint Security Intervention Squad (JSIS) to the scene.
When the bandits saw the team, they opened fire, and the policemen fought back.
The encounter lasted about twenty minutes, according to Ogun Police spokesperson Abimbola Oyeyemi, with two of the bandits shot dead and others escaping with gunshot wounds.
Inspector Omolayo Olajide, on the other hand, died in the gunfight, according to him.
Three locally made guns, sixteen live cartridges, various criminal charms, one cutlass, one small phone, and an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle were among the items recovered from the bandits, according to him.
Lanre Bankole, the Ogun Police Commissioner, expressed sadness over the death of a police officer while fighting bandits and ordered that the gang’s fleeing members be tracked down and brought to justice.
Bankole expressed his condolences to the late Inspector’s family and promised that his death would not be in vain.
