No party allowed to solicit funds outside Nigeria – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, has cautioned all political parties against requesting funding from other nations as the general elections of 2023 get closer, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports.

Festus Okoye, the national commissioner for INEC, added that no party is permitted to take donations in an anonymous manner in a remarks he made while appearing on Channels TV on Friday.

According to him, Section 225 of the Nigerian Constitution specifies that “no registered political party in Nigeria shall possess any funds outside the country,” therefore he stated that this was against the law.

The political party in question “has a constitutional and legal obligation to turn in such funds to INEC within a period of 21 days from the date of receipt of such funds,” according to Okoye, if such funds are transmitted to it from outside of Nigeria.

Recall that Former Governor Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate was recently accused of enlisting the aid of some foreigners to finance his campaign.
