Hoodlums set INEC office ablaze in Enugu

Unknown arsonists set fire to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Enugu State’s Igboeze North Local Government Area.

The office, which is located at the council’s Ogurute headquarters, caught fire late on Sunday night, completely consuming the affected structure.

It was learned that the state fire service, which has an office in Ogurute, was unable to intervene to stop the situation from getting worse until security was put in place.

Our correspondent was told by local sources that by the time security was offered, the building had been completely destroyed by the fire.

The two fire trucks from Nsukka and Ogurute were only able to stop the fire from spreading to nearby offices, the sources continued.

Following recent attacks by unidentified gunmen on Igboeze North and its neighbouring Igboeze South LGA, the state government imposed a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and prohibited commercial motorcycle riders in the affected LGAs.

Although there has been a significant security presence in the area since the outbreak of violence more than a month ago to prevent further attacks, the conflict has persisted.
