INEC has disqualified 106,280 voters in Ekiti and  Osun State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the registration of 106,280 voters in Ekiti and Osun States invalid due to a violation of the guidelines for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

In Ekiti State, a total of 40,234 new voters were registered, with 17,640 invalidated, accounting for 43.9 percent of the total number of new voters, while in Osun State, a total of 218,142 new voters were registered, with 88,630 invalidated, accounting for 40.6 percent of the total number of new voters.

The infraction occurred in all of the Federation’s states, according to INEC Chairman, who gave the statistics during a press conference at the Commission’s headquarters.

According to him, 1,126,359 new registrations out of 2,523,458 were invalid, accounting for 44.6 percent of all new registrations, and the infraction was discovered while cleaning up the voter rolls in 36 states.

“While the number of new registrants is impressive and reflects Nigerians’ eagerness to vote in the upcoming elections, the Commission has a responsibility to clean up the data to ensure that only eligible Nigerians are registered,” he said.

“As you are aware, the credibility of the Register of Voters is the bedrock of any credible election.” The introduction of biometric voter registration in 2011 aided in the sanitization of the Register. You may recall that in 2011, 73,528,040 Nigerians were initially registered.

“The Commission was able to remove 4,239,923 invalid registrations using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).” As a result, the total number of voters registered for the 2015 General Election was 69,288,117.

“As a result, between late 2015 and early 2017, 432,173 new voters were added to the Register during CVR exercises ahead of off-cycle Governorship elections in five states (Bayelsa, Kogi, Edo, Ondo, and Anambra), bringing the total number of registered voters in Nigeria to 69,720,350.”
