Oyo State’s incumbent governor, Seyi Makinde, has won a second term in office.
On Saturday, elections were held in all 33 local government areas of the state.
Makinde, who ran on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket, has been declared the election winner.
The state’s returning officer, Professor Adebayo Bamire, who announced the election results, declared that Makinde, who is running for re-election, had defeated all other candidates.
The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Bamire, declared that Makinde received 563,756 votes to defeat all other candidates.
Senator Teslim Folarin, the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), received 256,685 votes, Bamire announced while speaking.
Adebayo Adelabu, the candidate for Accord, received a total of 38,357 votes.
Makinde is the last member of the PDP’s G5, Integrity Group to face an election.
Already, Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Samuel Ortom (Benue), who have been in office for eight years each, all lost their senatorial bid while Nyesom Wike (Rivers) who is also completing his second term as Governor didn’t run for any elective post.

With the defeat of three of his comrades, all eyes were on Makinde in the March 18 poll.
INEC’s declaration of Makinde as the winner allowed him to avoid the defeat suffered by other G5 members.
On Saturday, governorship elections were held in 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states. A court case compelled INEC to conduct the governorship and state assembly elections a week earlier than originally scheduled.

Due to litigation and court decisions, eight of the 36 states — Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo — hold their governorship elections during the “off-season.”
Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara are the 28 states that held governorship elections on
11 governors, including Makinde, ran for reelection in the 28 states, while 17 governors are in the final weeks of their constitutionally mandated two-term limits of eight years, having been sworn in on May 29, 2015.
