The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has put its support to Victor Oye’s branch of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, despite the party’s current leadership conflict.
Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, was chosen as the party’s candidate for the November 6, 2021 governorship election by the Oye-led faction.
In a list released yesterday, the commission stated that the party’s National Chairman, Oye, is the only recognised leader of the party.
Labaran Maku, National Secretary, National Treasurer (Damian Ozurumba), Financial Secretary (Garba Ibrahim), and National Legal Adviser were also on the list (Ifeanyi Mbaeri).
Both Oye and a faction led by Jude Okeke had staked a claim to the party’s leadership. APGA faces disqualification for the November 6 election, according to INEC, since it failed to notify the commission before holding an ad-hoc congress to determine delegates for the primary.
According to INEC, APGA has no faction and Charles Soludo is the only governorship candidate.
Meanwhile, APGA governorship candidate Soludo has asked fellow candidates in the just-concluded primary to work with him to bring the party and Anambra State ahead.
“Let me offer my hand of fellowship, and look forward to a relationship with all of you for greater APGA and Anambra State,” Soludo said in his acceptance speech after winning the party’s primary in Awka.
“Over the next four years, the government must lay the groundwork for Anambra Vision 2070. Ours is a land of limitless options and possibilities.
“To build on the existing base and maximise potentials, we need continuity, consolidation, and change. To carry out the essence of our motto, “Light of the Nation,” we must unite and mobilise the creative energies and capital of people all over the world, as well as other investors.
If given the mandate, Soludo promised that he would use all of his global and national experiences and networks, as well as his local knowledge and experience as a rural lad, to make the people of Anambra proud.
“No vote will be taken for granted. We will strive tirelessly to earn every vote. We’ll double down on our efforts and campaign everywhere to reach as many people as possible. Our goal is to win 326 out of 326 wards and over one million votes in a free, fair, and transparent election, not just 21 out of 21 local councils,” he continued.
