Subscribers do not need to submit their International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers to the Nigerian Communications Commission because the data will be obtained automatically, according to the agency.
In response to Ejes Gist Nigeria reports that the regulatory agency would seek subscribers’ phone IMEIs within three months, the commission stated it would instead automatically acquire the phone identification numbers without requiring customers’ consent.

“At no time did the commission release a statement about the registration of IMEI by subscribers, and it has no plans to do so,” the commission said in a statement signed by NCC Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde.
“The reports in question are based on a section of President Muhammadu Buhari’s newly published Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration, which has been uploaded to the commission’s website.”

“It is important to note that the commission is establishing a Device Management System,” Adinde continued.
“The DMS will effectively safeguard consumers from phone theft while also detecting and removing phoney devices from networks.
“The technology will automatically capture IMEI without the need for subscribers to provide it.”
Nigerians have been outspoken in their opposition to a system that collects their phone number.
Many of those who expressed their views on Twitter claimed that the government could not be trusted with their phone IMEI number because it associates with terrorism sympathisers.
They questioned the government’s true motivation for storing their phone IMEIs, citing concern that the database could be used to silence critics.
