On Monday, security operatives from the Army, the Department of State Security Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and policemen clashed with protesting youths in the Ogbe-Ijoh community in Warri South West Local Area of Delta State, as the incumbent Speaker of the State, Sheriff Oborevwori, took his governorship campaign to the area.

According to witnesses, the aggrieved Ogbe-Ijoh youths staged a peaceful protest within the community earlier in the day, under the auspices of the Ijaw Youth Council and the Ogbe-Ijoh Interest Defensive Forum, to air their grievances over the prolonged boundary adjustment and continuous restriction of movement of Ogbe-Ijoh indigenes in the only Aladja/Ogbe-Ijoh access road, following the Delta Speaker’.

The irate Ijaw youths had mobilised themselves towards the political campaign arena with banners as early as 7 a.m., according to EjesGist Newspaper, to show their sufferings over the ongoing communal issue between the Ogbe-Ijoh and Aladja villages.

The Ijaw demonstrators were intercepted, according to sources close to security personnel, in order to avoid a situation where they would physically embarrass the Speaker.

“The protesters were ambushed because it would not be fair for the governorship aspirant to be embarrassed because he was the first among other aspirants to visit the local council since the start of the state’s political campaigns,” one of the security operatives who requested anonymity said.

Another witness indicated that the Speaker is unaware of the ongoing conflict between the Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities and so should not be drawn into the conflict.

However, spokespeople for the Ijaw protesting teenagers stated that they were demonstrating against injustices meted out to the community over the past seven years by the current political regime.
