IGP approves hijab for female police officers

IGP Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has approved a new and improved dress code for female officers, which allows them to wear stud earrings and headscarves while in uniform under their berets or peak caps, as the case may be.

This development, according to the inspector-general of police, addresses the growing concern for gender mainstreaming and respect for culture and diversity, and is in line with international best practises.

The dress code was revealed at the IGP’s meeting with Strategic Police Managers on March 3, 2022, according to Acting Force PRO CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to the IGP, the Nigerian police force includes officers from every local in the country, representing a wide range of ethnic and religious backgrounds, as well as a greater representation of women.

The police spokeswoman, on the other hand, stated that the dress code is optional, and that the IGP has tasked senior female police officers with ensuring that women police officers who have chosen to adopt the dress code adhere to the approved standard.
