Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has lambasted the for appointing his brother in law as the MD of Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc.

The group stated that “We may wake up to discover that Mr. President has appointed one of his foreign-educated children, such as his son, Yusuf, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria since he can appoint his brother-in-law as Head of the organisation that prints and mints the national currency of Nigeria.

The nomination of , the first lady’s older brother, as managing director of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, NSPMC Plc, has been criticized by the group.

According to HURIWA, If the claim is accurate, President Muhammadu Buhari may have violated his oath of office.

The rights organisation stated that Alhaji Halilu, the first lady’s older brother, had taken over the corporation in an acting capacity after Abbas Masanawa resigned on May 16, 2022.

According to reliable sources, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who also serves as the chairman of the NSPMC board, recommended the nomination, which the president approved.

Given Halilu’s illustrious academic and professional background, HURIWA stated in the statement endorsed by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, that there is no question as to Halilu’s competence or qualification to hold such an esteemed and professionally oriented position;

however, the issue is the ethics of the President’s action and its legality in light of the fuller import of the constitutionally protected oath of office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The group questions whether Buhari’s choice was influenced by his personal connections to Halilu, who is said to be related to him by marriage as the biological brother of his only known wife and the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Insisting that it breaches the Federal Character principles of the Federal Republic of Nigeria established in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution of 1999 as amended, HURIWA claimed that the appointment can be seen to be a case of nepotism.

HURIWA urged Buhari to revoke the appointment that may have gone against the Constitution by citing specific constitutional provisions. If this was not done before May 29th, 2023, HURIWA urged the National Assembly to look into the appointment’s legality.

Halilu is said to be the First Lady’s elder brother, and he took over the company in an acting capacity after Abbas Masanawa resigned on May 16.

According to reports, the president approved the appointment on the recommendation of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who also serves as the chairman of the NSPMC board.

Halilu attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Kuru, Jos Senior Executive Course 39, which resulted in the award of Member of the National Institute, mni.

 

He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with a Bachelor of Agriculture B. (Agric), a Masters in Business Administration, and a Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy.

It was also stated that he has over 23 years of banking experience, having worked for African International Bank Limited, AIB, and Zenith Bank Plc, and that he is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM.
