How to find a phone’s IMEI number
Nigerians are required to disclose the International Mobile Equipment Identity ( IMEI ) of their phones to the Nigerian Communications Commission beginning in July, according to the commission.
In the commission’s Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration, the regulatory body stated this.
The President, Muhammadu Buhari, has endorsed the NCC’s decision to begin implementing the Device Management System (a Centralised Equipment Identity Register) (retd.).
“Accordingly, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has commanded that the Device Management System be implemented within three months,” according to a section of the policy.
“With the goal of curtailing the counterfeit mobile phone market, discouraging mobile phone theft, enhancing national security, protecting consumer interests, increasing revenue generation for the government, reducing the rate of kidnapping, mitigating the use of stolen phones for crime, and facilitating blocking or tracing of stolen mobile phones and other smart devices, one of the means to achieve this goal is to facilitate blocking or tracing of stolen mobile phones and other smart devices,” according to the NCC.
“The development of a Centralised Equipment Identity Register, also known as a Device Management System, will act as a repository for all registered mobile phones’ International Mobile Equipment Identity and their owners.
“IMEIs that have been reported as stolen or illegal will be shared with all operators and service providers through the DMS.”
The mobile phone’s fingerprint is the IMEI number. It’s a 15-digit number that’s specific to each phone. A phone’s IMEI number can be tracked and located regardless of the phone’s cellular number.
“The IMEI of a phone allows us to track the phone,” claimed an expert who helped the Nigerian Police track stolen phones and requested anonymity.
“It allows us to track the phone’s information, the people who call each day, and the people who call on the phone’s residence address.”
“I can’t reveal how a phone’s IMEI works,” the expert continued. It’s private information. The persons stealing the phone can get around the information by leaking the secret.
“Some people are already attempting to alter the IMEI of stolen phones, but we know how to obtain the original.”
With this move, the NCC will have the IMEI numbers, NIN, and mobile numbers of every Nigerian.
