“The 9th anniversary of my mother’s death is today. I was summoned to the hospital where she breathed her last.”

My entire family had congregated, and I was the last to arrive. In addition, I was a newly ordained deacon serving in a nearby Anglican parish.

Due to her illness, my mother was unable to attend my ordination six weeks earlier, but I promised to bring her holy communion as soon as possible.

My world was shattered and confused when she died. Most of my family members became increasingly hostile, and some, including my father, blamed my sexual orientation on my mother’s death. Things deteriorated further.

Today, I remember my mother, who was a survivor and self-sufficient. I admire her ability to gain independence and live her best life until the end.

I thank my mother for taking the time to raise me and teach me as many domestic chores and duties as she could. Knowledge and wisdom were influenced.

Who taught me the value of compassion and love? Thank you for all of your dance moves and enthusiasm for afrobeats.

I honour my late mother, who accepted me completely through her words and actions. Who stood up to the haters and cared for me when I was down?
