New CJN Set to Fill In Tanko Muhammad’s Positon

Following the resignation of the current Chief Justice of Nigeria, , the National Judicial Council (NJC) is expected to recommend to President Muhammadu Buhari as the acting CJN, barring any last-minute changes.

The NJC was established by section 153 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and it has the authority to appoint and dismiss corrupt judges throughout the nation.

According to dependable sources at the NJC, Justice Ariwoola has assumed the role of leadership in keeping with the bench’s longstanding tradition, Vanguard reported on Monday.

The next most senior judicial officer in the court is supposed to take over when an incumbent head of court vacates office due to death, retirement, resignation, or sacking, it was learned.

After the recently resigned Justice Tanko, Justice Ariwoola is the most senior Justice on the Supreme Court.

In the previous four years, Justice Tanko is the second Chief Justice of Nigeria to resign from his position.

Justice Tanko succeeded Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, who in questionable circumstances retired from the bench before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

In December 1953, Justice Tanko was born.

He was supposed to captain the apex court until December 2023, but for his resignation.

On May 29, 2023, he was supposed to be the legal representative who swore in the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s new president.

Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who will probably succeed him if President Muhammadu Buhari nominates him and the Senate confirms him, was born on August 22, 1958.

On November 22, 2011, he was appointed as a Justice to the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s bench and was sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria. He had previously served as a Justice of the Nigerian courts of appeal.
