Tension erupted in Benin City after reports of gunshots disrupted a political gathering attended by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Edo State.

Ejes Gist News reports that the alarm was raised by the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, who alleged that armed men opened fire following the defection of Olumide Akpata to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to a statement issued by Tanko and titled “Breaking Red Alert in Benin, Edo State,” the incident began after a formal event held at the ADC secretariat in Benin City.

Tanko claimed that Obi and other political figures were trailed by suspected gunmen from the party secretariat to the residence of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.

“PO and the leadership of the ADC are under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State,” the statement read.

He further alleged that shots were fired at the gate of the residence, damaging several vehicles within the premises. Tanko described the development as a calculated assassination attempt targeting Obi and other political actors present at the location.

Political Context of the Incident

The reported attack followed the defection of Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress, a move considered significant within Edo State’s evolving political landscape.
