Gunmen have killed two policemen and razed a station in Imo.

 

Two police officers have been killed in an attack on the Isu Police Division by gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Two Toyota Sienna buses, a Toyota Camry car, and numerous motorcycles stormed the station, shooting sporadically before throwing a petrol bomb that razed the station.

CSP Michael Abattam, a spokesman for the police command, said the incident happened around 2330 hours on Sunday in a statement released on Monday evening.

“Armed men suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/ Eastern Security Network (ESN) Devices (I.E.D) that ignited the station attacked the station from the rear axis because the station has no perimeter wall, shooting sporadically, threw petrol bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (I.E.D) that ignited the station,” he said.

According to him, the division’s police officers reacted immediately by engaging the hoodlums in a gunfight.

 

“The hoodlums were dealt a heavy blow due to the Police’s superior firepower, and they scampered for safety, running in different directions with various degrees of gunshot wounds,” he added.

According to him, the thugs were chased into two hotels in Isu, where 17 male and female suspects were apprehended and interrogated.

A total of 12 motorcycles with no identification numbers were also discovered, as well as two vehicles, one Lexus RX350 SUV and one Lexus RX330 SUV, both believed to have been used by the hoodlums.

He said the hoodlums’ fire and IEDs damaged “some vehicles and part of the division’s building, and unfortunately, two police officers paid the supreme price, while one sustained a minor bullet injury on his head.”
