The attack on the facility, which occurred late Friday night, also resulted in the death of two other security officers who were critically injured.

An operative of the Oyo State Security Network codenamed Amotekun Corps, and an inmate who was attempting to prevent the attack from allowing them to escape were killed in the attack.

An Amotekun Corps member and a military officer assigned to the Oyo State Joint Security anti-crime patrol team codenamed Operation Burst are on the verge of death due to the severity of the injuries they sustained during a shootout with police.

During the attack, Ejes Gist News learned that no fewer than 847 inmates from the facility had escaped.

Only 12 hours after the attack, at least 262 inmates were recaptured as a result of a joint security effort with local authorities, which included members of the Vigilante Group and hunters from the surrounding area.

As of the time of publication of this report, 575 inmates had been confirmed to be on the run from custody.

According to a source, the Oyo Custodial Centre, which was established in 2007 with a capacity of 160 inmates, had 907 inmates at the time of the attack, indicating that the facility was overcrowded.

According to the source, 837 people, or 92 per cent of the total number of inmates, are currently awaiting trial, with only 64 people convicted.

While visiting the facility on Saturday, The Nation noticed a significant increase in security presence, including more heavily armed security operatives.

Surveillance vehicles and motorcycles were seen accompanying patrol vans as they searched the streets and alleyways for criminal activity in and around town.

In several strategic locations, armed operatives were observed conducting stop and searches of vehicles, particularly commercial cabs and buses.

During the duration of the visit, The Nation witnessed two vans of the Service transporting rearrested inmates who were then led back into custody by the officials.

After being destroyed by grenades, the main entrance to the facility was still in shambles when the operation ended.

, a Fulani warlord, is one of the high-profile inmates being held at the facility, a serial killer, responsible for the killing of Sunday Shodipe, and Mr Olaniyan Amos, the CEO of the Crime Alert company.

Whether the attackers were on a rescue mission to save any of the inmates, as has been speculated in some quarters, remained an open question.

The source said the attackers were able to overpower the security operatives stationed at the Abolongo Correctional Facility, largely due to the sophistication of their weapons.

According to reports, the grenade planted by the tower to destroy it had only a minor impact on the structure, but the effect was to cause the nearby motorcycles and tent to catch fire.

The lifeless body of the deceased inmate, who was dressed in jean shorts and a blue long sleeve shirt, was discovered on the opposite side of the entrance.

He was said to have been shot as he attempted to flee the scene.

The attackers attacked the building with grenades and heavy firearms, causing significant damage to the residential quarters of the facility’s executive director.

The top official was said to have been away from his quarters at the time of the attack, according to reports.

The majority of the damaged items had bullets and explosives embedded in them.

Mr Noel Ailewon, the Controller of Correctional Services at the Oyo State Command, confirmed the attack and stated that nearly 300 inmates from the Medium Security Correctional Facility who escaped during the attacks yesterday had been recaptured.

When asked about the safety of the high-profile inmates, the Oyo State Commissioner responded that they were in custody, though he declined to confirm or deny the identities of any of the prominent figures mentioned.
