Bullion van attack: Gunmen Kill Bank official, injure police officers

The police command in Abia has confirmed an attack on a bullion van and the killing of a bank official by gunmen on the Umuahia axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway.

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that l,  Geoffrey Ogbonna, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Umuahia on Wednesday.

According to Mr. Ogbonna, the incident occurred at Ntigha junction, close to Umuahia, around 1:13 p.m.

According to him, the bullion van carrying cash from a modern bank in Aba to Umuahia ran into the roadblock set up by the alleged robbers.

According to the police spokesman, at the time of the incident, the van was being escorted by six mobile police officers assigned to 28 PMF Umuahia and Counter-Terrorist Unit Base 4, Aba.


He claimed that during the , the driver was forced to swerve into a bush after the robbers fired multiple shots at the vehicle.


Mr. Ogbonna also revealed that the driver got away while the bank’s cashier was killed by the gunfire.

He claimed that during the gunfight between the assailants and the police, one of the assailants was neutralised.


Mr. Ogbonna added that the hoodlums’ AK 47 rifle, which was found to be loaded with ammunition in three magazines strapped together, had been found.


He added that the remains of the bank official and the hoodlum had been placed at a morgue and that three of the escort police officers who had been shot were taken right away to the hospital.


According to the police spokesperson, an investigation into the incident has already started.
