Group Cries Out As FG  Disbands New Security Outfits

The Forum Against Threat to Peace (FATP), a non-governmental organisation, has condemned the National Security Adviser’s (NSA) declaration that the National Taskforce on the Prohibition of Illegal Importation/Smuggling of Arms, Ammunition, Light Weapons, Chemical Weapons, and Pipeline Vandalism (NATFORCE) is an illegal security outfit.

In a statement, the NGO’s leader, Elder Emmanuel Abanikannda Mathew, condemned the pronouncement as anti-democratic and against the rule of law. He claimed that the outfit had previously been deemed legit by an Abuja court of competent jurisdiction.

He was alluding to a ruling by the Abuja Federal High Court, presided over by Justice E.S. Chukwu, on April 30, 2013, declaring the NATFORCE a legal entity. The outfit had filed a civil claim against the Federal Minister of Finance and the Inspector General of Police in that court (IGP).

According to the organisation, a bill to legalise the outfit as a security apparatus is currently before the National Assembly, the legislative organs charged with making laws for the country, on the grounds that fairness demands that the outcome of their oversight function be awaited before any action is taken on the matter. According to reports, the bill has passed its second reading.

The sponsors of the bill were former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi) and Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC, Kogi).

The NGO is of the belief that, obedience to the rule of law in and compliance with court pronouncement in a democracy should be the order of the day, saying anything contrary to that can never be acceptable in any civilised clime.

The organisation, therefore urged Nigerian to assist the government in any way possible to rid the country of any form of threat to peace and security, insisting that, any legally organised security outfit like NATFORCE should be allowed to be functional in Nigeria.

The NGO was astounded to find that the organization’s Director-General, Dr. Baba Mohammed, had welcomed Israeli experts to train his management team and operatives in order to make them qualified and effective professionals. He bemoaned the fact that it would be disbanded, saying that it would be a cog in the wheel of employment development for the teeming youth.

The group has urged Nigerians to persuade Monguno to revoke the disbandment order so that the National Assembly can complete its deliberations on the Bill before deciding on the next course of action, claiming that this is the characteristic of a democratic nation.
