The Youth Emancipation Movement Of Africa (YEM AFRICA) has condemned the alleged extra-judicial killing of Mr. Joseph Pessu. This was contained in a press statement made available to Ejes Gist Nigeria, signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Ike Akpomedawaro.
Pessu, 28years old father of two, was murdered by military personnel stationed at Ada-Val Areyenka Junction in Ugbuwangue community in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State over alleged disputes emanating from the government’s directives on the stay at home.
YEM said we condemn the killing by the men of the Nigerian Armed forces and demand for an immediate investigation, arrest, and prosecution of all those involved in the barbaric murder.
This premeditated murder of promising Nigerian youth in the face of a looming pandemic and a governmental lockdown directive has not only placed youths in a compromising position but has further exposed the inefficiency of those elected to govern and safeguard us in the face of trying times as thrown up by this pandemic.
As a foremost Pan African Youth Organization, we call on the Nigerian government to immediately commence a full-scale investigation into the murder of Joseph Pessu and ensure that the killer is not only identified but prosecuted in other to appease the family of the deceased and all concerned parties of which we have an interest.
We wish to state that we would fully support any legal action(s) taken by the family of the deceased or any law-abiding individual or organization towards the attainment of justice on this issue should the government fail to do the needful by bringing to book those behind this murder within the shortest possible time.
YEM AFRICA wishes to appeal to all Nigerians, most especially Deltans to remain peaceful while mourning this death and observe the stay at home directive by the state and federal government.
As an organization, we believe that more can be achieved through peace than war or retaliation, and the stay at home directive, for now, is one of the best measures that can be taken to prevent the spread of the pandemic.
We urge everyone to observe the preventive measures that we as an organization are spreading through our COVID-19 AWARENESS CAMPAIGN while praying to God for the return of our society to it’s a normal state.
We use this medium to appeal to the government at all levels to quickly create immediate mediums of providing supports to its citizens at this trying time of staying at home.
Using military personnel alone to enforce the stay at home directives without provision of relief materials, most especially food items, drugs, and water to citizens, would lead to the defeat of the purpose for which the rest at home directive was given as evidence in the death of Joseph Pessu.
Provision of relief materials to Nigerians would be far more productive in the enforcement of this stay at home directive than the usage of military personnel.
We sincerely commend all those that are obeying the stay at the home directive, observing all preventive measures, donating towards the fight against the pandemic, and dedicating their time towards the creation of awareness about the disease.
As an organization, we believe that we all would come out of this more robust and better.
