In an interview, Sule Lamido, the former two-term governor of Jigawa state, made this known.

Lamido based his claim on Jonathan’s conspicuous absence from the party’s major national events.

“I doubt it; he hasn’t been attending recent activities of our party,” Lamido said in a BBC interview when asked about Jonathan’s party membership.

Jonathan’s defection has been anticipated for a long time.

Jonathan has maintained an unusually close relationship with the party, which reached a pinnacle after his absence from the party’s national convention in October 2021, when Iyoricha Ayu was elected national chairman.

His absence from the party’s convention raised doubts about his commitment to the party and confirmed many people’s suspicions that he didn’t do everything he could to help the party out.

Before that, there was a lot of talk that President Buhari might pick the former president to be his successor in the upcoming 2023 elections.

Jonathan has yet to refute or confirm the numerous rumors surrounding his defection or otherwise.

Jonathan lost his reelection bid to Mr Buhari, but instead of conceding defeat, he went on to form an unusual and historic bipartisan friendship with the president, visiting him frequently and holding private meetings.

Jonathan has spent his time since leaving office mediating in political conflicts across Africa. He has not declared his candidacy for the 2023 elections, but the All Progressive Congress (APC) has stated that it will not deny him its platform if he wishes to run.
