The Fulani group descended on Abuja’s International Conference Centre to buy the form for him.

Meanwhile, the APC North-South Patriotic Coalition, or ANSPAC, has spoken out against alleged attempts by Jonathan to relinquish the party’s ticket.

During a staged protest at the APC’s national secretariat in Abuja, the group made its position clear.

With placards and banners reading “Don’t bring Goodluck Jonathan to destroy APC,” “Jonathan is not an APC member,” and other slogans, the group led by Tohin Rahim claimed that bringing Goodluck Jonathan to the ruling party would spell the end of APC in Nigeria’s political history.

Plans to bring Jonathan into the picture, Rahim said, would not fly because the party has many qualified, patriotic candidates to lead it to victory in the 2023 elections.

According to him, speculations about Jonathan’s possible imposition as the APC’s presidential flag bearer are gaining traction, and if allowed to proceed, “would glaringly project that the party does not have anyone of electoral value to lead the party to victory.”

According to him, the rumour that former President Goodluck Jonathan was being courted by some powerful APC figures to join the party and run for President in 2023 has been circulating for some time.

“What began as a rumour appears to be gaining traction so close to our great party’s Presidential primary. This Jonathan project will not fly simply because it will not benefit our party, and we want to do everything we can to prevent our party from being pushed out of power by ill-advised action.

“One of the most telling negative consequences of such an action is that the APC lacks anyone with electoral value who can win the election for us unless we smuggle in a former President we defeated seven years ago for his egregious incompetence as President.”

“There are Presidential aspirants in the APC today with credible pedigrees and enormous electoral value and capacity. Smuggling Jonathan into our great party is not only unnecessary; it is also self-incriminating, implying that our party’s performance in office has been worse than that of an administration that Nigerians overwhelmingly rejected and voted APC in 2015. It will also be an indictment of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, by leading Nigerians to believe that we lied to them when we said Jonathan’s performance was dismal and that our dear President Muhammadu Buhari would perform better.

“Are we now admitting that we lied to Nigerians and that we have since discovered that Jonathan was much better, and that he should return to continue his unseen good works?”

“One thing our party’s leaders must understand is that if the mistake of imposing Jonathan on APC is made, and our party’s and Mr. President’s goodwill help him win and he becomes president again, the likelihood of him switching loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is high.”

“A number of APC members are already complaining that the PDP decampees have taken over the party’s leadership. Now you want to make them President as well? That is a recipe for our party’s demise, and we will not accept it. We will do everything possible to prevent the Jonathan project from taking place, as it will destroy our party.

“Any attempt to give Jonathan a free Presidential ticket will undoubtedly result in a mass exodus of key stakeholders from the APC, causing the party to lose power.” What happens to those who have worked tirelessly to build the APC since its inception? What happens to genuine APC members who paid N100 million for Presidential nomination forms? What happens to those who continue to declare their presidential ambitions and purchase the necessary forms? According to reliable sources, former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that he will only join the APC if he is assured of receiving the party’s presidential ticket automatically. This will not take place.

Rahim called on the party’s leadership to make a clear statement on the issue as soon as possible.

“We implore our leaders to prevent this from happening because it will not serve our beloved party well and is almost certain to cause the APC to lose power at the centre and the current majority control of states.” “We will intensify these protests, even if it means doing so on a daily basis, until the party makes a categorical position public that there will be no attempt by our party’s leadership to commit such a historic misjudgment,” he added.
