The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has stated that it is yet to receive The court judgment which dictates that Godswill Akpabio be named the APC senatorial candidate representing Akwa Ibom North/West constituency
Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission stated that it had not yet received the most recent court decision regarding the former Niger Delta Affairs Minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Recall that an Abuja Federal High Court had mandated that INEC recognise Akpabio as the All Progressives Congress (APCsenatorial )’s candidate for the Akwa Ibom North/West constituency in 2023.
Justice Emeka Nwite specifically ruled that INEC violated the law when it refused to accept and publish Akpabio’s name after the APC supplied it.
Festus Okoye, the INEC National Electoral Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, responded to the development during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, saying the electoral body does not rely on media reports before making decisions.
When questioned about whether INEC will follow the ruling, he responded, “As of today, we have not received any court order or judgement.”
According to our policies, we obey court orders since, in accordance with Section 287 of the Constitution, we are a public institution and must do so.
But before we can decide what the court expects us to do or whether the commission will appeal against a particular judgement, we must first receive the judgement, study it, and comprehend what has happened in relation to the matter.
