Meanwhile, Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, has stated that if the party and President Muhammadu Buhari support the Igbo presidency in 2023, they will leave a great legacy.
According to him, the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party hold the key to preserving Nigeria’s unity by adhering to the zoning convention that gave birth to the fourth Republic in 1999.
He also praised the PDP for clarifying its position on zoning the 2023 presidential election in a timely manner.
According to him, the South-East should produce the President in 2023 to, among other things, ensure equity, natural justice and good conscience and “end of the civil war” activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Okechukwu stated these on Sunday in an interview with journalists in Abuja on the clarification made by PDP on its position on zoning.
He also stated that APC and, by extension, President Muhammadu Buhari’s greatest legacy to Nigeria’s socio-political stability and development would be to support a President from the South East.
Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, has refuted claims made by Alhaji Babangida Aliyu, a former governor of Niger State, and Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, at various fora, that the PDP has zoned the party’s presidential ticket to the north, preferably in favor of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“The PDP’s attention has been drawn to comments and speculations from certain individuals claiming that our party has zoned its presidential ticket to a specific part of the country,” Ologunagba had stated.
“This is completely false and does not represent our party’s position in any way.” For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP states unequivocally that its presidential ticket has not been zoned to any part of the country.”
Okechukwu, who is also the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, describes the PDP’s clariy as “very interesting and refreshing,” adding that “the two dominant political parties in our multiparty system, APC and PDP, hold the key to restoration of Nigeria’s unity by observing the zoning convention.”
“That same zoning convention gave birth to our 4th Republic, and we’re counting on the two to save our fledgling democracy,” he said.
He explained that his adamant campaign for zoning was that political power has always rotated between the North and South.
“Peace, unity, and prosperity of our dear fatherland are my primary concerns,” he stated.
Okechukwu said that in political activities, the law, with its legal teeth, combines with convention and its moral weight, stressing that both played prominent roles in the political economies of all countries at one point or the other.
“It was on this premise, for example, that patriots such as former Vice President Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Solomon Lar, Alhajis Abubakar Rimi, Umaru Shinkafi, Adamu Ciroma, Dr. Olusola Saraki, and a host of others shelved their self-interest and adopted the zoning convention, thereby saving our country,” the VON DG said.
