More information about the reconciliation meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has been revealed.
Before the 2023 general elections, the two leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agreed to put their differences aside and work for the good of the party.
As previously reported by EJES GIST, PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor Wike were widely reported to be at odds over the party’s control structure.
Governor Wike is said to be planning to make it easy for Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal to win the party’s ticket in 2023, a move that is said to irritate Atiku.
This sparked a feud between Wike and the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, who is thought to be siding with the Atiku camp against Wike.
Following a meeting in Port-Harcourt on Tuesday, the two PDP chieftains put their differences aside and decided to work together in the party’s best interests.
Wike’s Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, elaborated on what was discussed during the meeting, quoting Atiku as saying that the PDP’s interest drew him to the state.
He went on to say that Atiku and Wike spent time together reconciling issues so that the PDP would be ready to win the election in 2023.
Nigerians, he said, are eagerly anticipating the PDP’s takeover of federal power in 2023.
“Well, I came here to reconcile with the governor on party matters and how we can ensure unity and stability in the party,” Atiku explained.
“For us to take over government in 2023.” Nigerians, in my opinion, cannot wait until 2023 for the PDP to return.”
Atiku lamented that Nigeria’s current state of insecurity, bad economy, unemployment, and other problems are alarming and must be addressed.
“I have never seen it (insecurity) this bad,” he said. I am over 70 years old, and I have never seen anything so bad in terms of security threats, the economy, or unemployment. This is the absolute worst.
“How come you can’t give us some time?” Our policies will be developed. When the time comes, we will present them to Nigerians.
“That’s something we’ve done before. We had the highest economic growth, the best foreign reserves, and we reduced unemployment under the PDP. You know we’re capable.”
While praising Wike’s leadership abilities, Atiku stressed the importance of all PDP stakeholders working together for the party’s success.
Meanwhile, Abba Kyari, a Nigerian supercop, has spoken out about the bribe allegation levelled against him by Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi.
In a statement released on Thursday, the police officer denied the allegation that he took money from the embattled Hushpuppi to apprehend a co-fraudster.
