Rivers Gov Fubara Slams Police IG Egbetokun, Insists on Local Government Elections Without Police Security

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has sharply criticized Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, amid the ongoing controversy over the state’s local government elections. Fubara expressed his displeasure at the police’s stance regarding the election, claiming the police were using a misinterpretation of a court order to withdraw security for the elections.

Fubara suggested that the police were acting under external influence, indirectly referencing his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The Inspector General of police should be ashamed of himself,” Fubara said, after visiting the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office on Friday. He argued that no court order explicitly barred the elections, saying, “We do not need your security, it happened in Anambra, enough is enough.”

The governor emphasized his determination to see the elections held, even in the face of police opposition. “This is the last fight, and we will fight it to the end,” he declared, further stating that he was willing to face any consequence, even violence, from the police.

The legal battle surrounding the elections intensified following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the 2023 voter register to the RSIEC. However, a Rivers State High Court ruled that the local government elections, scheduled for October 5, should proceed, citing a Supreme Court mandate that all states must hold local government elections within three months.

Fubara has vowed to comply with this mandate, declaring public holidays on Thursday and Friday to facilitate the elections. “Any failure on our part to conduct the local government election would be a clear disobedience of the Supreme Court’s mandatory order,” he said, warning of the financial consequences the state could face if the elections were not held.

Tensions continue to rise as the election date approaches, with Fubara’s determination setting the stage for a showdown between the Rivers State government and the police.
