Walter Smith’s death was announced by the Rangers on their verified Twitter account on Tuesday. “We regret to inform you of the passing of Walter Smith, our former manager, chairman, and club legend,” the club said.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Scotland national coach, and one of the most successful managers in Scottish football history, Walter Smith,” the Scottish FA said in a statement.
“Everyone at the Scottish FA is thinking of his friends and family at this time.”
Smith took over as coach of Scotland’s under-18s and under-21s teams in 1978 and 1982, respectively. He also assisted Alex Ferguson at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico before joining Rangers as an assistant to Graeme Souness later that summer.

In March 2021, Smith underwent an unspecified medical procedure that required him to stay in the hospital. However, he was unable to overcome his health problems, and his death was announced on October 26, 2021.
