Former Governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has publicly sought forgiveness from Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, for any perceived wrongs during his tenure.

Speaking at Igbinedion’s 90th birthday banquet held in Benin on Saturday, Oshiomhole described the elder statesman as a “good father” and commended his remarkable contributions to society.

During his speech, Oshiomhole expressed deep gratitude for the support and mentorship Igbinedion had extended to him throughout his political career. Reflecting on his 2007-2008 gubernatorial run, Oshiomhole acknowledged that without Igbinedion’s backing, his path to becoming Edo State governor might not have been possible.

“As a Catholic, I want to confess that I might have done some things I shouldn’t have done as governor,” Oshiomhole said. He then asked for forgiveness, noting that his actions may have caused irritation to Igbinedion.

In a heartfelt and lighthearted comparison, Oshiomhole likened Igbinedion’s large number of supporters to a parent with many children, some of whom may occasionally cause frustration. He humorously remarked that having many children brings its challenges, saying, “Even me that have six children, sometimes I wonder why they do the things that I do not approve of.”

Oshiomhole continued, “I have always looked for an opportunity to say to the Esama of the universe that I am sorry for any of the things that I said knowingly or unknowingly, or any of the things that I did that a son should never have done to a father. On your 90th birthday, I ask for your forgiveness, and I pray that you grant it.”

He concluded by praising Igbinedion’s visionary leadership, particularly in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and other initiatives that have brought international recognition to the country. Oshiomhole also expressed a desire to reunite with Igbinedion’s son, Lucky Igbinedion, signaling a reconciliation between the two families.

Oshiomhole’s apology at the birthday celebration reflects a significant moment in Edo State’s political landscape, acknowledging the importance of forgiveness, unity, and leadership.
