Five feared killed
Following a communal incident that occurred on Wednesday between Yoruba residents and Ibeno indigenes in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, five persons were killed, many more were injured, and assets worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Both sides have suffered defeats, according to a community source who could not confirm the number of casualties to our correspondent.
Although the exact reason of the squabble has yet to be determined, a source stated the issue began as a cult conflict before taking on ethnic overtones.
He went on to say that the Ilaje people, who are largely fisherman, have begun fleeing the hamlet via bush routes, while their homes and tents are robbed and destroyed by the hoodlums.
When approached, Odiko Macdon, the Police Public Relations Officer, just stated that he was unaware of the problem but that he would investigate.
“I’m not sure,” he responded, “but I’ll find out.”
Mr Okpolupmn Etteh, a former commissioner of Special Duties in Akwa Ibom State and a native of the area, could not be reached for comment on the matter. However, Barr. Oluwajuwon Ogunbiyi, a concerned Yoruba citizen living in Akwa Ibom State, who confirmed the incident, described the situation as unfortunate and called on the state government to set up a committee to investigate the crisis.
“It’s unfortunate that this crisis has resulted in the deaths of innocent people and the destruction of property,” he remarked. Over the decades, the Ibeno village had been a wonderful host to both indigenes and non-indigenes who had lived in peace and cooperation.
“As a result, I’m using this medium to appeal to both warring parties for peace and an end to hostilities.” I also want to call on the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, as well as the chiefs of the security agencies in the state, to intervene quickly to put an end to the bloodshed.
“As soon as possible, the state government should form a committee to investigate this crisis and determine the root cause.” On both sides, those fueling the flames of violence must be apprehended swiftly.”
