FG asked Nigerian students to apply for New Chevening scholarships.

The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission, has encouraged qualified Nigerians to apply for Chevening scholarships, a British government initiative.

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that the call comes amid the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ ASUU ongoing strike.

This was stated in a letter signed by Chris Maiyaki, the NUC’s Deputy Executive Secretary, Administration, and addressed to all vice-chancellors.

“The National Universities Commission has received the letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ref. TSW/BRI/V/T, dated 12 August 2022, with the attached Call Letter from the British High Commission Abuja, dated 3rd August 2022, on the above subject,” the commission stated.

“The British High Commission has announced the call for applications for Chevening Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom, which will open on August 2nd, 2022 and close on November 1st, 2022.”

“The Chevening Scholarships are fully funded scholarships awarded to individuals from all backgrounds who demonstrate the necessary skills and commitment to effect positive change.”

Who can apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

Applications are now open for fully funded Chevening Scholarships to study for one-year master’s degrees at UK universities.

What matters is your ability to submit a well-thought-out application. The application should demonstrates you are capable of excelling on a rigorous master’s programme in the UK  and that you have a clear vision for your future.

Eligibility for Chevening scholarships

Ineligible applications will be rejected, so it is important that you check that you meet our eligibility criteria before you start your application.

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.

Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.

Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application.

This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class. 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.

Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.

Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2023.FG urges Nigerian students to apply for New Chevening scholarships

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

Have British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a British Overseas Territory citizen or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).

Have refugee status in a country that is not a Chevening eligible country.

Scholarships are available to applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and have refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country.

Have previously studied in the United Kingdom with the assistance of a UK Government-funded scholarship.

Having a master’s degree does not preclude you from applying for the Chevening scholarships.

To study for a second master’s degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly explain how it will help you fulfil your career goals of influencing positive change in your home country.
