Full details of Dana Air suspension have emerged.
With effect from midnight on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended Dana Airlines’ Air Transport Licence (ATL) and Air Operator Certificate (AOC) indefinitely.
According to a statement from the NCAA’s Director-General, Capt. Musa Nuhu, the suspension was carried out in accordance with Sections 35(2), 3(b), and (4) of the Civil Aviation Act of 2006 and Part 18.104.22.168(a)(1) of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs), 2015.

The management of Dana Airlines has since received the suspension order that was issued by the Director General, Captain Musa Nuhu.
“The decision is the result of a financial and economic health audit conducted on the Airline by the Authority, and the findings of a recent investigation into the Airline’s flight operations, which revealed that Dana Airlines is no longer in a position to meet its financial obligations and to conduct safe flight operations,” the statement read.
The NCAA requests their understanding, acknowledging that the safety of flight operations takes precedence over all other considerations. This preemptive decision will have a negative impact on the passengers of the airline and the travelling public.
According to Daily Trust, Dana’s suspension comes after Aero Contractors, the nation’s oldest airline, halted regular flight operations.
All of Dana Air’s domestic flight operations would be halted as a result of the suspension until it was lifted.
The skyrocketing cost of aviation fuel, known as Jet A1, which is almost reaching N900 per litre, has recently put airlines in a severe financial situation.
However, this was made worse by the high foreign exchange rate—at the parallel market, one dollar was exchanged for N630—which prevented the airlines from doing their scheduled maintenance.
Prior to Dana’s suspension, Sukhjinder Mann, its deputy chief executive officer, left his position due to what sources claimed was a foreign exchange issue that made it difficult to pay his salary.
Why Dana Air suspension?
A Boeing 737 belonging to the airline was forced to make an emergency landing in Abuja on Tuesday because of a problem with one of its engines.
All flights have been cancelled owing to ongoing audits of Dana Air’s business practises, the airline announced in a statement on its social media platforms.
However, the airline acknowledged the development in a formal statement, stating that its “operations have been suspended as directed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in order to undergo a complete operational audit with effect from midnight on 20th July 2022.”
Dana Air suspension, what is the FG saying?
The statement read: “Operational audits are regulatory and airlines are obligated to suspend their operations when the NCAA calls for it and we understand the impact this suspension will have on our partners, staff, passengers and the general public but we are very confident that we would come out stronger as we have done in the past.
“We wish to assure the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) that we are fully ready and committed to cooperating with them in the course of this audit and to also reassure our customers and partners that we are safe, efficient and reliable.
“The recent skyrocketing cost of Jet A1 at 830/litre, unavailability of forex, and inflation are also contributory factors to this decision regrettably.
“We crave the understanding and patience of our customers, travel and business partners and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience our short absence from the market might cause.
“Our customer service team will continue to operate 24/7 to assist affected customers with necessary information on refunds and our offices will be open to all our existing partners.
What is the management saying about Dana Air’s suspension?
The management of Dana Air has said they are working on the audit and resolving issues faced as a result of high aviation fuel costs. The management also said they will come out very strong and has directed all their customer service to help stranded passengers.
