FG Slams Basketball in Nigeria with 2 year Ban, withdraws from international Basketball events.

Nigeria’s immediate withdrawal from all international basketball events for a period of two years has been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, said this during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Dare, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ismaila Abubakar, said a committee will be formed to oversee basketball leagues across the country.

“Following the never-ending crisis that has plagued and nearly wrecked Nigeria’s basketball growth, President Muhammadu Buhari has sanctioned Nigeria’s withdrawal from all international basketball events for a period of two years.”

“This is effective immediately,” he stated.
Nigeria’s departure, according to the minister, will allow the to focus its efforts on revitalizing the sport from the grassroots up, as well as domestic leagues that have been dormant.

“This will also enable the establishment of an Interim Operation Committee (IMC) to oversee the management and development of Nigeria’s domestic basketball leagues,” he explained.

Dare further stated that this will address other related difficulties regarding the game’s development and advancement in Nigeria.

He then appealed all stakeholders to assist in maintaining and stabilizing the game.

“By issuing the order, the Federal reaffirms its interest and commitment to the growth of basketball in Nigeria, as well as the enormous potential of our young locally, in an atmosphere free of rancour and squabbles,” the order reads.

“As the government embarks on far-reaching steps to reposition, sustain, and stabilize the game of basketball, it urges players, officials, fans, and other stakeholders to remain calm.”

The minister stated, “This will contribute in the growth and success of the sport in the long-term interest of the country.”

The basketball sport has been mired in a leadership crisis for the past five years.

In 2017 (in Kano and Abuja) and 2022 (in Benin and Abuja), two parallel national federation board elections were held, resulting in the formation of rival governing bodies.
