FG, Labour Union Sign MoU on ₦70,000 New Minimum Wage

The Federal Government and the Labour Union have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a new minimum wage of ₦70,000.

This significant development follows the resolutions reached by a committee on civil servants’ salaries during a meeting held in Abuja.

According to a statement from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, signed by Eno Olotu, the new minimum wage is set to be implemented starting July 29, 2024.

The committee also recommended that the wage award previously discontinued by the Federal Government should continue to be paid until July 28, 2024.

The committee, led by Didi Walson-Jack, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, highlighted that the government took the prevailing economic situation into account when making these decisions.

Walson-Jack commended the committee members for their diligent efforts during the negotiations, describing the process as the shortest and most peaceful in recent history.

“Both the Trade Union and Government representatives have agreed on the consequential adjustments in salaries resulting from the new minimum wage,” Walson-Jack stated. She also confirmed that all members had signed copies of the MoU, which would be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.

 

In response, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, the National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council representing the Trade Union, praised the Head of Civil Service and expressed satisfaction with the committee’s outcomes. This agreement marks a crucial step toward improving the livelihoods of civil servants in Nigeria.
