The decision to extend the deadline was made in response to a request from stakeholders to accommodate registration in hard-to-reach distant locations, foreigners and diplomatic missions, diaspora, and address poor enrolment in schools and hospitals, as demonstrated by enrolment figures, they said.

It also came after an evaluation of the exercise’s status, which revealed substantial progress, necessitating the consolidation of enrolment and NIN-SIM verification gains across the country.

“There are over 5,500 enrolment systems within and outside the country as of July 24th, 2021, and this would considerably improve the NIN enrolment procedure and subsequent linkage of NIN to SIM,” according to the announcement.

“The extension was approved by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, as part of measures to make it easier for citizens within and outside the country, as well as legal residents, to obtain the NIN, and it is critical to take advantage of the extension.

“The NIN-SIM connection also makes it easier for security agencies to carry out their statutory tasks, and appropriate parastatals under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy are assisting them as needed.”

There are now 59.8 million unique NIN enrolments, with an average of three to four SIMs per NIN, according to the announcement.

It further stated that the Federal Administration’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, praised the Kano State and other states for making NINs a mandatory prerequisite for school enrollment and access to other critical services.

He praised Nigerians for their “patience and cooperation with the order on the NIN-SIM registration exercise so far,” as he put it.

Similarly, Prof Umar Garba Dambatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, and Engr Aliyu Azeez, Director-General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission, have urged citizens and legal residents to take advantage of the opportunity to complete the enrolment and verification process before the deadline of October 31.
