At a press conference yesterday in Ado Ekiti announcing the trial census that will be conducted in the state as a lead-up to the big census next year, Mr. Deji Ajayi, the commissioner who represents Ekiti at the NPC, said this.
The NPC advanced a trustworthy technological innovation for the conduct of the exercise, the commission assured, preventing politicians and other elites with vested interests from hijacking or manipulating the process.
The former head of service for Ekiti State added that nine towns in nine local governments—chosen from the state’s 16 LGAs—had been divided into Enumerated Areas (EAs) to facilitate the trial census.
Ado, Emure, Iro, Ijero, Ikole, Iworoko, Ise, Ikun, and Omuo Ekiti were named as areas to be counted in the trial census.
In order to plan for the recruitment of young Nigerians, private organisations will use population statistics, according to Ajayi, who explained the importance of censuses to nation-building.
These statistics will also be used by the government to plan for the needs of Nigerian youth, students, and the nation’s health. They will also be aware of how many seniors need to be taken care of.
The NPC boss assured participants that the exercise would be challenging to rig: “The biometric technology will capture your face and fingerprints and send them to the server. Any similar information supplied will be noticed and immediately removed from the data.”
