The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a notorious criminal who is accused of killing over 15 individuals in the state, including Chinwendu Lovina Ezeh, a female corps member, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports
Malachi Uwem, 24, is accused of being a serial killer and the leader of a notorious armed robbery gang that specialises in robbing POS operators and gas stations.
The suspects were traced to their hideouts in Ikang in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, where they were apprehended after a gunfight with police agents, according to the command’s spokesperson, SP Odiko Macdon, in a statement released in Uyo on Thursday.
“The said Malachi and (the) gang have killed over 15 persons and have left some of his victims permanently maimed,” according to the PPRO.
According to Macdon, several victims are still in hospitals, while others have closed their enterprises due to massive losses.
The killed NYSC corps member died last week in a hospital in Enugu, Enugu State, after being shot on February 20 and robbed of her iPhone, credit card, and N7,000 at Ikot Ambang.
“On Monday, April 25th, he shot and killed two young men on the grounds that the village was unable to meet his demand of N20 million and could only raise N5 million,” he added.
“On 21/22/22, Malachi robbed and killed a lady teacher on her way home from school in Okobo Ibiono who had stopped at a POS shop to withdraw money,” according to the statement.
“On March 3, 22nd, Malachi shot and killed Mrs Idongesit Damson in her Okobo Ibiono home. He also shot one Wisdom, prompting a protest and the closure of the Uyo/Ikot Ekpene Expressway.
“The suspect and his team looted many POS shops and gas stations in Okobo Ibiono, Itak axis, and Uyo.
“On April 28, 2022, operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Command’s Special Weapons And Tactics Squad, led by CSP Julian Igbudu, tracked the hoodlums to their hideouts in Ikang, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, where Malachi Friday Uwem, his second in command, Wisdom Sunday Akpan, 20-year-old Ndifreke Sunday Ebong, and 33-year-old Annans.

“In the ensuing milieu, three of the gang members were fatally injured while attempting to escape.”
According to the PPRO, the suspects had one cut-to-size pump action gun, one locally-made handgun, numerous cartridges, one gas head that looked like a gun, and other charms.
