The police have arrested Hon. Joseph Adegbesan, a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, and two other suspects for allegedly threatening the life of Hon. Oludare Kadiri, the former Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
Adegbesan, a close associate of the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, was apprehended by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Thursday, along with Muibi Olufodun and another suspect named Samson.
The police stormed Awa in Ogun State’s Ijebu North Local Government Area to apprehend Adegbesan, while the others were apprehended in Ago-Iwoye, according to reports.
The former Deputy Speaker, who represents the Ijebu North II State Constituency, instructed his lawyer, Oludare Adejare, to file a petition with the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, alleging a threat to his life.
Kadiri had requested a “detailed, speedy, and expeditious investigation and subsequent prosecution” of the suspects, according to the petition.
“We have been briefed by our client, who is a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, representing Ijebu North II State Constituency, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, that one Muritala Babatunde (aka Muri etee), who was alleged sometime in 2018 of being a member of the Aye Confraternity and the killing of two (2) students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoy Honourable Joseph Adegbesan purchased the ammunition for the Aye Confraternity to kill two (2) Olabisi Onabanjo University students.
“Our client also informed us that the situation in his constituency has changed, as he received confidential information that the same Honourable Joseph Adegbesan and his cohorts, Muibi Moibi Olufodun and Gbenga Suberu, among others, have sponsored cult members of the Aye Confraternity to murder him.
“We are also informed that on the 3rd of February, 2021, one Sule Ganiyu, Lekan Ojulopesi, and one (1) other person came fully armed to the House of Assembly on the invitation of Honourable Joseph Adegbesan. Our client also claimed that upon seeing them, he informed his then-Orderly, Inspector Kola, who informed him that the said Sule Ganiyu and others had fled before he could make an arrest. However, our client was unaware that Sule Ganiyu and other members of the Aye Confraternity had gone to our client’s brother’s house, where they threatened to kill our client’s brother (Toba Kadiri) and told him to inform our client that they would kill him as well. Sunday Amazing, Samson Akibola (aka Damson Guard), Ade Olooto (aka Ade eba), and Lekan Ojulopesi are some of the cultists’ names that our client was able to obtain.
“As a result of these disheartening events, as well as the confidential information he received about Honourable Joseph Adegbesan and Muibi Olufodun being the sponsors and brains behind the regrouping of the Aye Confraternity, our client has been falsely imprisoned by fear, as he has no confidence left in him to move around freely even with the arrest of the aforementioned Sule Ganiyu, our client has been falsely imp

When contacted, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police, confirmed that IRT operatives were in the state to arrest the suspects based on a written petition.
He said, however, that because the IRT is not under Ogun command, he couldn’t confirm the contents of the petition.
Prior to his removal as Deputy Speaker, Kadiri had an altercation with the SSG during the All Progressives Congress (APC) membership registration and revalidation exercise.
