The Lagos State local government elections on Saturday were marred by irregularities, manipulations, and low voter turnout, with barely a handful of voters spotted in several polling units, particularly in the Epe local government area of the state.
Journalists monitoring polling units in various council districts observed voter indifference in the majority of polling units during the election, blaming the apathy on the minimal participation of opposition parties in the elections.
Oke-Posun, Oku-Iga, St-Micheal school, Onitasin, Popo-Oba, and Sabo, all in Ward A3 of Epe Local Government Area of the State, were among the places visited.
In around 10 a.m., potential voters in Oke-Posun were able to register and vote at polling unit 006, where most voters voted in proxy, using a voter’s card that did not belong to them, due to low voter turnout.
Mr. Sikiru Owolomoshe, the All Progressive Party (APC) Vice Chairmanship candidate for Epe local government, was observed handing cash of N500 to voters and allowing individuals to vote by proxy, resulting in a commotion and hullabaloo.
In polling unit 006, Oke-Posun, the registration area code of the Vice Chairmanship candidate, Owolomoshe, there was a heated exchange of words, misdeeds, and manipulations, despite a low voter turnout, romancing the opposition and compelling people to vote for his political party (APC).
People in Oke-polling Posun’s unit 006 Sisters of Jannah (SOJ), Abeokuta Branch, Ogun State, has stated that child molestation and abuse is a serious offence before Allah that should not be perpetrated by any human being, as it carries particular punishments before Allah.
In the Alausa, Nitel, Shade, and Ogunmodede polling units of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, former Governor of Lagos State, the election saw low voter turnout in most polling units, while children and adults were seen playing around some of the polling units, and commercial activities were also going on in some areas, such as Shade, Ayetoro, Ita-opo, Popo-Oba, and Lagbade in Ward A3 of Ep
Most residents were shocked by the appearance of Mrs. Surah Oluyemi Animashaun, daughter of Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, as the Chairmanship candidate of Epe local government, claiming that it was unjust and unfavourable to the entire residents of Epe local government.
A voter in Ogunmodede, Hammed Adekunle, blamed the poor voter turnout on the imposition of candidates and the bias of some leaders, claiming that most of the party’s leaders (APC) were ungodly and did not believe in free and fair elections.
Another voter, Abdullahmeed Ayinla, claimed that citizens were uninterested in the election because neither political parties nor candidates would reward them for “vote buying.”
Ayinla lobbied for a bill that would allow INEC to handle council elections in the country, claiming that state-run local government elections were unacceptable to the people because they lacked faith in the government’s ability to conduct them.
He claimed that the proposal will make council elections credible, free, transparent, and fair, and that the APC was hell-bent on winning at all costs, regardless of people’s wishes.
Idris Adisa, who voted in Ward A3’s St-Micheal Anglican Primary School polling unit, claimed the poor turnout was due to the APC’s failure to develop credible, reasonable, and reliable candidates.
He claimed that the local government Chairmanship candidate, Ms. Surah Oluyemi Animashaun, was unqualified since her credentials were questioned and she was unable to counter the claims of credentials.
“Indeed, she has skeletons in her cupboards, as she produced two different secondary school certificates (SSCE) for the screening, which members of the party are not contending with, and some kicked against her emergence but being manipulated by her father, the Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, which makes people shun the local government election in the local government area of the State,” Adisa al-Mustafa said.
