INEC Makes Crucial Decision in Edo PDP crisis against Governor Obaseki
A major setback has occurred in Governor Obaseki’s attempts to seize control of the PDP structure in Edo state.
As of Tuesday, September 20, INEC recognised the candidates created by the party group led by Dan Orbih.
There are two factions of the PDP in the state of Edo, one led by Obaseki and the other by vice chairman of the party at the national level Orbih (South South)
The candidates created by the Chief Dan Orbih-led faction of the Edo state PDP in the primary held in May have been recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This suggests that the opposite faction, represented by Governor Godwin Obaseki, lost the conflict over the PDP’s organisational structure in the south-south state.

Different primaries held by each faction resulted in candidates for various elected posts.
The list of candidates for the elections in 2023 was however displayed on the notice board at INEC’s offices in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, on Tuesday, September 20.
The names of people who won the primaries held by Orbih’s group are included on the list.

Ejes Gist Newspaper gathered that INEC stated that its action was mandated by the court in the list that was published.
In May of this year, parallel primaries were held in Edo state because of a power struggle between Governor Obaseki’s group and the faction led by Orbih, the party’s national vice chairman (South South).
The state’s PDP secretary, Hillary Otsu, commented on the issue and said that the list made public by INEC is the genuine list for the state.
Yes, he responded, “that is the genuine list. Those are the candidates from the party’s primary elections, which were observed by INEC, and we do not have any objections.”
