Meanwhile,

Femi Otedola, a billionaire, has sold N5.76 billion worth of shares in First Bank of Nigeria (FBN), over seven months after acquiring a 7.56 percent stake in the financial institution, making him the lender’s largest shareholder.

According to Ripples Nigeria study, Otedola’s total investment in First Bank was valued roughly N30 billion until he sold 517.93 million shares in one day. According to additional sources, he sold about 200 million shares, bringing his total number of shares sold to over 800 million.

The millionaire owned a total of 2.71 billion shares before selling them.

This is divided into 210,000,000 in direct ownership and 2,507,282,140 in indirect holdings. With Monday’s sell-off, Otedola now owns around 1.99 billion shares, reducing his ownership percentage from 7.56 percent to 5.24 percent.

According to Ripples Nigeria study, Otedola made a N3 billion profit on his transaction, as First Bank’s stock has risen 11% since the tycoon was discovered buying up shares in H2 2021.

Despite investors only finding his stock unload on Tuesday evening, his remaining ownership in First Bank is now valued at N23.97 billion, but the sell-off is anticipated to further depreciate the networth, as the lender’s share was down -3.11 percent after trading closed.

Why is Otedola selling shares in First Bank?

He took out the N5.76 billion money at a time when the Federal Government plans to sell five National Integrated Power Plants (NIPPs).

His withdrawal from First Bank is similar to his exit from Forte Oil, when he sold his majority shares in order to purchase a majority position in Geregu Power Plc in 2019 through his investment vehicle, Amperion Power Distribution Company Limited.

According to a source with inside knowledge, Otedola may be eyeing a move into the power industry after selling the shares as part of FG’s plan to find buyers for its five National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP): Omotosho Generation Company, Olorunsogo Generation Company Limited, Benin Generation Company Limited, Geregu Generation Company Limited, and Calabar Generation Company Limited within the next six months.

He was reportedly said to have expressed interest in one of the power plants and maybe been pre-qualified to buy it.

Before increasing his investment in Geregu Power Plant to almost $1 billion, Otedola had already spent $94 million in 2013 and $350 million in 2018. This figure is the expected cost of purchasing a new power plant.

Meanwhile, with Otedola selling large amounts of stock, it’s thought that an institutional investor or a billionaire like him is scooping up the shares the former Forte Oil founder is offloading.
