- Caverton, Sterling Bank, Oando are stocks-to-watch this week
This week, the Nigerian capital market will resume trading for five additional days. On Ripples’ list of Nigeria stocks to watch are Caverton, Sterling Bank, and oil and gas company Oando.
The stocks on the Ripples Nigeria stocks watchlist are being kept an eye on for potential trading or investment opportunities. A list of stocks can be informally created by an investor for investment objectives. But in order to save you the trouble, we went to the trouble to do it based on specific criteria.
Please take note that the Ripples Nigeria Stocks Watchlist does not constitute a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold. Before making any investing decisions, it is essential to speak with your financial advisor.
Caverton
After Adeniyi Makanjuola, a shareholder in the company, sold more than 2.56 million shares, the company was added to this week’s list of stocks to monitor. On June 7, the chairman, Aderemi Makanjuola, additionally sold 200,000 shares via his company, Molar Vessels Supply Limited.
The Makanjuolas sold the stock as the company struggled to retain Chevron, one of its most important clients, after Bristow Helicopters was awarded the contract for the oil and gas company.
Minority investors may view the brothers’ sales as a signal to sell their stock ahead of a potential decline, which might have a negative effect on Caverton’s share moving forward.
Bank of England
Abubakar Suleiman, the managing director of Sterling Bank, and three other senior directors at the firm bought shares for more than N42.36 million, turning the bank into a potential asset.
Having lost -24 percent of its value on the capital market since January 2021, the management is either trying to salvage Sterling Bank’s share or the directors believe that the company has development prospects that are not yet apparent to the market.
In either case, the acquisition of their shares could have a significant impact on shareholders’ returns in the long run, but investors should proceed with caution while trading because Suleiman and other buyers may not be able to stop all future selling.
Oando
After years of functioning as a public firm, Oando is becoming private. This will be a share buyback as 14 minority owners wish to sell 299,257,869 shares to Ocean and Oil Development Partners Limited (OODP).
Already owning 57.37 percent of Oando, OODP would have 100 percent ownership if it acquired the shares of the 14 minority shareholders. Co-owned by Oando CEO Wale Tinubu, the share acquisition has not received regulatory approval.

To ensure a smooth winding-up procedure, Nigerian Exchange Limited has halted trading in Greif Nigeria Plc’s shares.
This is in response to Greif Nigeria Plc shareholders’ approval at the company’s annual general meeting, which took place on January 31, 2022, authorising the start of the voluntary winding-up process of the company and in accordance with Section 622 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020.
Greif Nigeria announced in 2019 that it would be leaving the Nigerian Exchange. Eleven months after deciding to halt operations, the producer of steel drums and plastic containers made the choice.
Greif Nigeria intends to sell its Nigerian assets for a price that will be decided by the business board in addition to delisting from the stock exchange.
The NGX’s remarks
“Further to the approval of the shareholders of Greif Nigeria Plc at its Annual General Meeting which held on January 31, 2022 authorising the commencement of the process of voluntary winding up of the Company and in accordance with Section 622 of Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 which states that a voluntary winding-up shall be deemed to commence at the time of the passing of the resolution for voluntary winding-up,” NGX stated in a statement.
To ensure a smooth winding-up procedure, NGX Regulation Limited (NGX RegCo) wishes to inform all Trading License Holders and the investing public that trading in the shares of Greif Nigeria Plc has been halted as of this Monday.
This is in accordance with Section 624 of CAMA 2020, which states that “Any transfer of shares made after the commencement of a voluntary winding-up, and any change in the status of the members of the company, shall be void,” and “Any transfer of shares, other than a transfer made to or with the sanction of the liquidator, shall be void.”
Important information
The company is performing below operating and material expenses, according to Mr. Adedayo Olowoniyi, the chairman of the company.
He claimed that despite implementing cost-cutting initiatives and promoting efficient practises, the company was still experiencing difficulties with cost-recovery through repeated price hikes in the market.
We do not anticipate an improvement in the near future due to rising competition and a stagnating market for steel drums, according to Olowoniyi. Greif Nigeria has been operating significantly below operating costs—even below direct material costs—and there are no indications that the market situation would get better.
